R&D Controls Engineer

LOGOMAT automation systems, Inc. is one of the world’s leading suppliers of automated smart conveyors, for assembly and test lines, in the automotive industry. With three family owned and operated facilities on three continents, LOGOMAT supplies their products to well-known Fortune 500 companies, including OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and integrators.

We are currently looking to hire a talented R&D Controls Engineer to join our team. If you’re excited to be part of a winning team, LOGOMAT automation systems Inc. is a great place to grow your career.

Develop, prototype, and validate new control-system capabilities for the roller and eCart product lines. This role strengthens the controls department by adding a Research & Development position focused on investigating, designing, and testing new features to improve and grow our conveyor products. This position would also include supporting active conveyors in the field during installation, commissioning, and production. This individual should be self-motivated and driven to explore new ideas when they arise. This person should also be comfortable talking to customers for remote and in-field troubleshooting.

1. Prototype Development and Hardware Evaluation

  • Designing, constructing, and programming experimental control systems
  • Evaluating new hardware (PLCs, microcontrollers, drives, safety devices, IO blocks, etc.)
  • Benchmarking communication timing and reliability
  • Stress-testing devices under load, fault conditions, and network disruptions
  • Documenting findings with clear go/no-go recommendations
  • Seeing the idea through to the end and bringing the product to market

2. Field / Remote Customer Support

  • Supporting customers during the design phase to develop their layouts and assist with design choices
  • Helping the customer’s programmers develop the logic to control the conveyor using our standard function blocks
  • Onsite support for customer systems during installation, commissioning, and production
  • Remote support for controls issues in the conveyor system after production is started, moving to onsite support if issues cannot be resolved remotely

3. Cross-Functional Technical Support

  • Mechanical Engineering — aligning hardware choices with controls strategy
  • Manufacturing — improving designs for assembly and end-user experience
  • Project Engineering – releasing the new products to production
  • Sales — validating feasibility of requested features from customers
  • Drafting – visualizing the product to the customers
  • Leadership – determine overall direction for new product features

What you should bring with you:

  • Deep understanding of PLC programming (Rockwell, Siemens, and ideally one open platform like CODESYS).
  • Strong knowledge of industrial networking fundamentals.
  • Ability to implement new hardware with limited documentation.
  • Experience with VFDs, servo drives, motor starters, safety devices, distributed IO, and other mechatronic systems.
  • Ability to design and critique electrical schematics (24 VDC control, safety circuits, network topology).
  • Experience with scripting or embedded firmware (C/C++, Python, Arduino, etc.) for rapid prototyping.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with the ability to isolate networking, electrical, and logic issues methodically (remotely and in the field).
  • Possess documentation discipline appropriate for R&D by explaining clear test results, creating reproducible setups, and recording traceable decisions.
  • Must be able to get unfamiliar devices talking to each other, reverse-engineer behavior with protocol analyzers, and troubleshoot issues when they arise.
